Technology, like much of the world around us, is something that is constantly changing and evolving, developing throughout the years. Over the years, it has been a huge part of everyday life, making it more efficient and convenient in several ways. Having recently moved into a new decade, looking back at the previous ten years offers a clear insight into just how much technology has changed and developed during that time.

Technology, of course, is a term that has a huge variety of meanings, depending on the context and topic of discussion. However, we will be focusing mostly on personal technology, and the internet itself, including social media, technological devices, and other advancements. In 2011, ten years ago now, technology looked completely different to what we now see and use every single day. Use of technology also was completely different, with a lot less use overall. For example, “between 2014 and 2018, the average time spent on social media apps increased by almost 60 percent.” That clear rise in technology, and more specifically, social media, use shows a drastic shift. Social media has become even more significant in the past year alone, with more and more individuals turning to digital means of communication in a world where you couldn’t just go and physically be with someone in the same way.

However, social media use is not the only thing that has changed over the past ten years in the world of technology. Technological devices themselves have also seen a dramatic change. What were once large and clunky devices have gotten increasingly sleeker and slimmer, with more aesthetically pleasing looks. This creates a world in which not only are these devices prettier and more stylish, but often easier to move around with and more portable. Slimmer and sleeker devices are much easy to carry with you than thicker, heavy alternatives. Due to this, technological devices, such as phones, tablets, and computers, are things we always have quick access to. With such quick access to the devices, we spend more time on them than we would otherwise, once again showing technology becoming an even larger part of everyday life.

These devices are not only getting easier to carry around, but also much slimmer. They are also getting smarter, with programs, algorithms, AI, and other features that allow them to complete more and more daily tasks for their users. Voice and facial recognition, integration of different aspects of life, and easier communication all add to the need for technology. In a world where anything and everything can be linked to technology, and life runs on it in so many ways, to not be “plugged in” is incredibly rare. This is a huge shift to the beginning of the decade, in which none of this was as prevalent or as necessary to everyday life as it now is.

But what does this mean for the future?

No one can be sure what exactly the future holds, but one thing is certain. Technology will continue to be a huge part of our lives. It is likely that its role will continue to grow, as well, creating an even stronger presence. Some predictions show a world that will be so fully integrated with technology that the line between reality and a digital world is blurred. That is, of course, only one possibility in the variety that are ahead of us, but it is an interesting idea to think about. With a world so steeped in internet, social media, and technology, what will our future hold? Whatever it is, it will definitely involve technology as a major part of it.
