Technology has aided humanity in making strides in countless areas of life, from medicine and health to entertainment. One of the clearest examples of technology advancing, however, is transportation. With the expansion of global communication, and a need for efficiency and speed in our every day lives, transportation has made massive strides in becoming much more efficient and quicker in getting people from place to place.
A recent stride that has been made is the new testing of the Virgin Hyperloop, a transportation method using vacuum tubes and small pods to transport passengers at high speeds. “The concept, which has spent years in development, builds on a proposal by Tesla founder Elon Musk. Some critics have described it as science fiction. It is based on the world’s fastest magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, then made faster by speeding along inside vacuum tubes. The Maglev train speed world record was set in 2015 when a Japanese train reached 374mph in a test run near Mount Fuji.”
We have seen high speed travel before, but this builds on the previous methods and creates an even more effective method of high speed travel. Similar methods have not been tested in the same ways that this hyperloop has, however. “Nobody has carried passengers before. Sara Luchian, director of customer experience, was one of the two on board and described the experience as “exhilarating both psychologically and physically” to the BBC shortly after the event. She and chief technology officer Josh Giegel wore simple fleeces and jeans rather than flights suits for the event, which took place on Sunday afternoon outside of Las Vegas. Ms Luchian said the journey was smooth and “not at all like a rollercoaster” although the acceleration was “zippier” than it would be with a longer track. Neither of them felt sick, she added.”
The successful test of this new method of transportation is a good sign for its implementation in the future. However, it will likely be many years before it can fully be implemented in an effective way. The technology of this transportation method has quite a few exciting prospects for its implementation.
These loops can be used for several different areas, reducing travel time between stops and cities drastically. Areas such as London, with two airports nearly fifty miles apart, could be traversed in less than five minutes between the two airports. Cities across states or countries could be much more accessible to each other, and overall, travel will become so much quicker than it already is.
Technology has helped in many new advancements, but teleportation is one of the clearest of these. With new methods of transportation, travel will become much more efficient and effective in people going cross country.
